🎯 What is this game about?
Chronicles of Castle Avel is a cooperative board game by Polish designers, where everyone plays together, not against each other. You take on the roles of heroes tasked with saving the magical land of Avel from an approaching Monster. There is no way to “win on your own” here — victory or defeat always belongs to the entire team. And that is one of the game’s greatest strengths.
It’s classic fantasy adventure in a very accessible, family-friendly form: exploration, monsters, equipment, preparation… and a final showdown you all need to be ready for. And “ready” is often more optimistic than accurate 😉
🧙♀️ Creating your hero — the magic starts with crayons
Every game begins with creating your own character. Literally.
You color your hero, give them a name, design a crest, and choose starting equipment. It’s a surprisingly pleasant moment — even for adults. One of my favorite parts was exactly this: coloring my character. From the very beginning, it feels like you’re playing someone of your own, not just a generic pawn.
This step sets the tone perfectly: light, adventurous, and very much shared.
Ten etap świetnie ustawia klimat całej gry: lekki, przygodowy i bardzo „wspólny”.
🗺️ How does the gameplay work?
The game is played in rounds. On your turn, you can move across the modular board, visit locations and use their actions, rest, fight monsters, roll dice, and use your equipment. As the game unfolds, you explore new parts of the map and gain weapons, armor, potions, and gold — all to prepare for what’s coming.
After a set number of rounds, the Monster enters the game. From that moment on, the pressure rises noticeably. You not only need to defeat it, but also stop its minions from reaching the castle. Suddenly time feels short, resources are scarce, and every decision matters for the whole team.
🎲 Dice, cooperation, and tension
One particularly fun element is the variety of dice, each offering different possibilities and meaningful choices. Randomness is present, but it never feels frustrating — instead, it creates tension and plenty of funny table moments.
I played with three adults and… it was genuinely tough. We had very little armor, took a lot of hits, and at one point it became almost comically difficult. We did win in the end — but it wasn’t easy. And that made the victory incredibly satisfying, with lots of laughter along the way. The game can really surprise you with its level of challenge.
🧩 Solo mode
This is worth stating very clearly: Chronicles of Castle Avel works great in solo mode. It’s a full experience, with tension and time pressure intact. A perfect option for an evening when you want an adventure just for yourself — without feeling like you’re playing a “cut-down version” of the game.
🌿 Why does this game work so well?
Because it truly understands cooperation. Decisions are made together, one player’s success is everyone’s success, and mistakes affect the whole team equally. It brings children and adults to the same table effortlessly — younger players enjoy the adventure, while adults appreciate the planning and risk management. The atmosphere helps a lot too: the artwork, modular board, and straightforward rules make it very easy to get immersed in the world.
✨🧀🍞 Cheesy Joke Corner 😄
Chronicles of Castle Avel teaches you that a knight’s backpack is not like a woman’s handbag.
You can’t fit coins, a shield, a sword, and potions all at once. Clearly designed by a man. 😉
☕ My impressions
This isn’t a game I would play every week. I’m also not entirely sure about its long-term replayability.
But. From time to time, Chronicles of Castle Avel delivers exactly what I want from an adventure game: emotions, cooperation, laughter, and the feeling that we truly experienced something together. It’s one of those games you bring out when you want to sit down as a team — and then it really shines.
🎯 Final score: 20/10
Adventurous. Cooperative. Honest about what it wants to be. Perfect for families, friends, and anyone who prefers saving the world together rather than winning alone 🏰✨
